If you are going to work with images, there are several tools to help you:

Once you have an image file available on your computer, you can edit it with the GIMP.

Using KSnapshot

A screenshot is an image of your computer desktop, or a part of the desktop. Many people use screenshots to keep a record of transactions that occured online, for example when booking a ticket, or in connection with their bank account. You could make a printed copy, but in the paperless office it makes more sense to store the copy as a file that can be printed later, if and when necessary. On these web pages, screenshots are used extensively to show you what the various programs look like.

With many programs you can create a screenshot from the Print menu (shortcut: Ctrl-P), by choosing Print to File. The resulting file is usually stored in postscript (.ps) format.

While this procedure is not wrong, KSnapshot gives you greater flexibility and a better quality image. With KSnapshot, you can create a screenshot even if the program lacks a print menu. You can save the image to standard image formats (.png and .jpg) and adjust the timing of the capture.

Full Screen Window Under Cursor

When you start KSnapshot, you will see an image of the whole desktop in the KSnapshot window. To obtain the image of a single window, follow these steps:

  1. Set the Capture Mode to Window Under Cursor, and adjust the Snapshot Delay to 2 seconds or more.
  2. Click on New Snapshot, and place the cursor over the window of interest (within 2 seconds).
  3. Your new screenshot will be displayed in the KSnapshot window. If you are dissatisfied, repeat step (2).
  4. Click on Save As and give your screenshot a name. The image is by default in .png format.
