Failsafe

The simplest way to escape any hardware problems is to start the CD with the failsafe option.

failsafe

When the word boot: appears at the bottom of the screen, type the word failsafe. This option disables most of the problematic hardware, and usually solves the problem.

If the failsafe option does not solve your problem, the likely reason is that you have a very new laptop. Before you despair, make sure that you are using the most recent version of Snøfrix. If you are using a recent version of Linux/Snøfrix, and the failsafe option still does not work, you will probably have to wait a few months before Linux supports your hardware.

Other options: smarter solutions

Using the failsafe option is like using a sledgehammer to put in a nail. Although it works, there are probably more sophisticated solutions to your problem. Typically you will need one of the no-options.

For example, if you observe that the start-up process collapses immediately after writing the text Found USB, then it is most likely the USB-subsystem that is causing your problem. The solution is to use the nousb option, as follows:

knoppix nousb

The failsafe option is in fact an alias for a long set of no-options, including the following:

nosound noapic noacpi noscsi nodma noapm nousb nopcmcia nofirewire noagp nomce nodhcp

If you can isolate your problem, so that the computer starts up with a single no-option, then your computer with all its peripherals will be almost completely functional. Only the disabled subsystem will not work.
