The Home Directory

Part I: the Vanishing Home Directory

The home directory (/home/knoppix) is the default location to save the files created by Snøfrix, but it is not suitable for long term storage, because all the files it contains vanish when the computer is turned off. This unusual behavior is traceable to the fact that Snøfrix depends on an unusual technology --- it does not use the hard disk.

Nevertheless, the home directory is perfectly useable as a temporary working space, and we therefore recommend that you begin by saving your files there or in the Desktop directory (/home/knoppix/Desktop) before moving them to a more permanent location.

home Click on the house icon on the left side of the panel, at the bottom of the screen. Then all of the files in the home directory (/home/knoppix) will be displayed. One of the folders there is called "Desktop".
desktop Click on the desktop icon on the left side of the panel, at the bottom of the screen. The desktop will be displayed. All files inside the "Desktop" folder (/home/knoppix/Desktop) are displayed on the desktop.

Part II: the Persistent Home Directory

If a vanishing home directory makes you nervous, you should know that there exists an alternative.

By identifying the home directory with a permanent storage medium, you can create a so-called persistent home directory, where your files will be automatically saved, and you will no longer have to worry about losing them.

To create a persistent home directory, click on the Knoppix menu (the penguin at the bottom of the screen, on the right side of the panel), choose Configure and Create a a persistent KNOPPIX home directory. You will be asked to select a partition on which to create space for your files, and how much space you want to have available.

persistent home

Once the persistent home directory is created, you need some way to access it. The usual way to do this is to start Snøfrix with a boot option: When Snøfrix starts up, and the word "boot:" appears at the bottom of the screen, type:

knoppix home=scan

Snøfrix will then automatically find your persistent home directory. Without the boot option, your persistent home directory will be ignored.
